List Building, A Chore? But It Pays Big Dividends

Mistakes can be costly!  Trust me, I’ve made my share.

When I was younger and in college I spent a great deal
of time studying karate.  If you made a mistake there
it usually resulted in a fair amount of pain.

My Sensei encourage us to learn from our mistakes, but
better yet, learn from the mistakes of others (far less
painful).

How To Redirect Traffic

I’ve had a number of requests to know how to redirect traffic through a “Good Looking” link that you create, like http:// yourwebsite/recommends/ProductName/

This can be handy to cloak an affiliate link, or to place a tracking code on the redirect page to monitor the traffic flowing through to your destination URL.

This is the code as provided by the good folks at web-source.net.  Just replace ‘http://www.yourwebsite.com’ with the URL of the final destination page.

How To Lock Your Code

Have you ever wished you could prevent people from viewing and stealing your html code?  If you are not aware, a simple right click on a web page (choose  view page source) will show the code for the page.

You can and stop people from discovering things about you and your methods by inserting a simple line of code.  The code is inserted after your meta tag area, between the </head> and the <body> tag.

The code is <body oncontextmenu=”return false;”>

How simple is that?

Try it out, and test to see that it’s working for you.

Keywords and Google

You can’t just aimlessly inject your keywords into the content of your site.  It needs to “Read Well” to those that have English as a first language.  Google has a way of looking at your site to see if it is truly about your keyword.  If for instance your site is about horse training and you are targeting the keyword “snaffle bit”, Google will like to see “snaffle bit” in your page title and in the body of the page at the rate of 3 to 5 % of the words.  However Google also looks for related keywords like horse, bridle, hooves, saddle and the like.

There is a very useful too to discover these pools of connected keywords.  It is a little free program called “Dupe Free”.  While extremely useful to discover duplicate content between articles, it has a feature that will show the associated keywords to your main keyword.  The LSI (latent semantic indexing) that’s Google uses helps them to reassure that a sight is really about a specific keyword.  In other word, you must have a good deal of other related keywords on your page to give Google the confidence to rank you for your intended keyword.

Remember the person doing the search belongs to Google.  If Google gives them good search results they will continue to use Google as their search engine of choice.  Be sure your site has the content that “Google’s Customer” is looking for.

Optimize Your Website

Unless you’re one of the Big Dogs out there with money to burn don’t go chasing after highly competitive keywords. Let those with lots of money  slug it out for Googles attention.

And how can you determine if a keyword (or phrase) is highly competitive?  There is a free search tool provided by Google.  Search Google for “Google Keyword Tool”. You can enter your keywords there and Google will show the best available search statistics you will ever be able to find.  When there are hundreds of thousands of searches for a keyword, its likely too competitive.

Ideally your site should be focused on one keyword or keyword phrase only (pages within your site can be optimized for related keywords).

The Google Keyword Tool will show you search results for your keyword and 100 other related keywords.

To determine the level of competition you are facing if you try to optimize for a keyword, use the regular Google search engine page.  Enter your keyword between a set of quotes like “dog training”.  Google will give you the number of pages they have indexed that contain the exact phrase in the same word order.  Some pages may just contain the phrase in passing and are not really competition at all.

Now to dig deeper and find out how many websites contain your keyword in the title of the page (a real measure of the intentions of the webmaster) you need to do a specialized search.  use the following search in the regular Google search engine  “allintitle: Keyword”. So if you are searching for dog training the search string would be, “allintitle: dog training” without the quotes.  This will give you the number of sites that have the keyword right in the title.  These sites are targeting the keyword and are your real competitors.  If this number is under 30,000 you can expect good results with a little effort.

Choosing Your domain Name

What will your website be about?  Fishing, Sales of a new or old widget, a new service for local customers or for world wide customers.

Your domain name should tell your visitors something about what to expect to find on your website.  However you may opt to choose an easy to remember name, that may not convey the site content.

Google and the other search engines give extra bonus points to domains that include the search term that you are targeting.  For instance if you are in the plumbing business in Denver called Equinox Plumbing and Heating and the domain is available, you might be tempted to grab it.  However the new customers that you want to attract don’t have a clue about what the name of your business is.  You are hopping that they will be able to find you with a search on a search engine like Google.

Now ask yourself what search terms are they likely to use if they are searching for the services you provide?  Most likely something like “Denver plumbers” “plumbers in Denver” “emergency plumber Denver”.  Unless they already know about you from other promotion efforts that you undertaken, they are likely to use search terms similar to those above.

Consider the domain “denverplumber” or “plumberindenver”if one of them is available.  Then inside the website you can promote the exact name of your business.

If you have an affiliate product that your are promoting, determine the keywords associated with the product and the related traffic for each keyword (see Google Keyword Tool).  Then search to see if the domain is available in .com .net or .org extensions.  Using a domain name like this will give you a leg up with Google.

Of coarse you will have to do all the other SEO magic work to help advance your domain in the eyes of the search engines.

Web Mail or Local Mail?

You will immediately see that I’m not a big fan of having your email on your own computer based system.  Programs like Eudora or Outlook allow you to read and store emails right on your own personal computer.  While this might seem  convenient and secure it can have many drawbacks.

Remember that if you are like most of us you don’t gave a whole IT team to keep your computer safe and functioning.  consider that you might get a virus on your computer and that all data (your emails included) could be altered, damaged or deleted.  Even if you can get some IT to remove the virus you might be without email access for hrs or even days.

There are several options for the average person.  If you maintain your own web site you will no doubt have email privileges through your hosting account.  Setting up an email there is straight forward using cPanel (the control panel for most web servers these days).

The other alternative and the easiest is to get a free email account with major providers like Hot Mail ,  G mail or Yahoo. All of these provide extremely good service and FREE to boot.

They can be accessed from any computer with internet access.  If your computer is down with a virus or any other issue you can easily receive and send emails from any other computer you might have access to.

Easy Access To Your Passwords

An important file to create and maintain is a Critical Information Control File (CICF) that you keep all of the log in URLs, user names and passwords for the many sites that you are likely to subscribe to.  This file will be available to you while you are on your computer.  However when you are away from your computer it is good to carry a fresh copy of the file on a small memory stick (do not lose your memory stick).  It is best to erase the file when you return back to your main computer.  Sometimes you will not have your memory stick with you.  At times like these it is good to have a web based email account and send yourself your CICF.  Keep sending fresh copies of the file to your web based email account, getting rid of the older ones.  Save this file to a special folder in your account.

This way you can always have access to this information mo mater where you are, as long as you have an internet connection.

Preparation for eventualities will serve you well.  Having a fall back position or solution can often save your day.

Choosing A WYSIWYG HTML Editor

WYSIWYG is an acronym for “What You See Is What You Get”

A Quick search on Google will give you a number of choises.  There are the more popular paid versions of Front Page or Adobe Dreamweaver.  But if you are looking for a FREE version take a look at Kompizer or  Sothink.  I started with Sothink and I continue to use it because I am familiar with it.

In Sothink editor you are allowed only one piece of work open at a time (the $20.00 paid version lets you have several pages open at a time).  There are 3 tabs in the lower left of your working window that let you view your work in HTML (just the code) for mat, The WYSIWYG or Design format and the Preview format.  The Preview format shows you how it will look when viewed through a browser.

Once you have your editor downloaded and opened, just type a few things on the screen.  You can chose many features from the control bar at the top as you move along. Such as right, left or center justification.  You can choose the font and color of the text.  just scroole over the various features in the control bar and a little description tag will pop up.

Something you might want to learn and practice right off the start is to work with the feature called Tables.  You will find this extremely useful in structuring your page and controlling the positioning of the various elements yu will want to incorporate into your page. You can create tables within tables to give yourself the control you need to make things appear where you want them.

As you add things to your work, have a look at the HTML code that is producing the page. At first it will seem a incomprehensible jumble.  But after a while you will pick out bits of code that are causing the specific effects.  Your goal here is not to be able to write code from scratch, but to identify the bits of code that are responsible for the various elements on your page.  It just takes time for this to all sink in.

A great place to study any of these topics is the W3schools home site.  There are tutorials on a huge variety of web authoring subjects.

Passwords, User ID and Logins

If you have ever forgotten or misplaced a login URL or your user ID or your password you know the problem I’m going to address.

The answer is to first admit to yourself that you can’t be expected to remember all the stuff for the wired world.  My solution is to set up a CICF file (Critical Information Control File).  This is where you record all of the URL’s of the login pages, User IDs and passwords for the many places you will encounter on the internet.

I just use a simple notepad file. Notepad can be found on almost every computer by clicking on the “Start” button, then mouse over the “All Programs” area at the bottom left and wait for your computer to populate the list for you.  Roll your mouse over to “accessories” and a window will open and you will see on the list “notepad”. Click on it to open it.  It is a good idea to make lots of notes for yourself when doing projects in notepad and save them in the same folder as your project is.  Very handy when you come back to a project at a later date and can’t remember the details.

Keep this file save on your computer in a safe place where other users are not likely to access it.  Another idea is to email the file to yourself as an attachment.  If you have a web based email then you can access your CICF file from any computer through your email account.  You would have to constantly update the file.

The sooner that you start your CICF file the less likely you will be pulling your hair out over something in the future.
